Fundraisers with a head for heights will abseil 98-feet inside historic Lincoln Cathedral this summer to help patients at Nottingham’s hospitals.
Nottingham Hospitals Charity is the only charity to offer this unique experience, which involves dropping through a hatch in the ceiling near the bell tower and descending by rope to the floor.
The event takes place on Saturday 22 July, with time slots available between 11am and 4pm.
One dare-devil couple signed up to take the plunge are Kerry and Mike Askin, who are raising money for Nottingham Children’s Hospital where their young son was treated after suffering a collapsed lung on Christmas Day 2015.
Their son Dylan, then three, spent 48 hours fighting for his life on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) after suffering a bilateral lung collapse. He was later diagnosed with Pulmonary Langerhans Cell Hystiocytosis – an extremely rare cancer that affects one in 10 million children. He spent 13 weeks in hospital and suffered two serious infections requiring life support. He is now stable at home but attends regularly for Chemotherapy.
Mike and Kerry, dubbed ‘Team Dylan’, say the descent will be a mental and physical challenge.
“One of our new year’s resolutions was to raise more money for Nottingham Children’s Hospital because of the amazing work they do and how fantastic they have been with us and Dylan throughout this whole process. We have had phenomenal care provided from the PICU team, respiratory, oncology, physiotherapy and all the nursing staff at Nottingham Children’s Hospital and that is to name just a few!” says Kerry.
“We genuinely cannot help the team at the Children’s Hospital enough and we hope this helps them to continue to provide excellent care for patients young and old alike.”
People taking part in the rope descent must be aged 16 or over and weigh no more than 20 stone, and those aged under 18 will need signed parental consent. Registration for the event costs £30 and you must raise a minimum sponsorship of £150 for Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Those taking part can choose the area of Nottingham’s Hospitals they want their money to go to
