Major milestones for Saving Lives Helipad Appeal

March 2015 has been a great month for the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal, which is raising £3 million to build an onsite helipad at the East Midlands Major Trauma  Centre at Queen’s Medical Centre. Less than eight months after the appeal was launched, the charity has already raised more than £1 million in gifts and pledges.

This includes a £250,000 donation from the County Air Ambulance HELP Appeal, which is just the first in a series of donations that they’re planning to make towards the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal.

The appeal reached its second major milestone on Wednesday 18 March, when Nottingham City Council approved NUH Trust’s planning application for the new helipad and a 650 space multi-storey car park on which it will sit.

Like most hospital helipads, building the helipad at QMC relies entirely on charitable donations – and there’s still a fair way to go with fundraising! That’s why we’re looking for individuals, community groups and businesses across the East Midlands to really get behind the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal and help us raise our £3 million target.

Jenny Wing, Head of Fundraising for the charity, comments: ‘QMC is the Major Trauma Centre for the whole of the East Midlands, so if you have a serious accident anywhere in the region, you’ll probably be taken there. Every second counts when it comes to treating patients with life-changing injuries. The onsite helipad will reduce the current transfer time for air ambulance patients from up to 20 minutes to less than 5 – helping save time, to save lives. Major trauma can happen to anyone, at any time, and you never know when you or a loved one might need the helipad.’

At the moment, air ambulances land at Highfields Sports Ground, opposite the University of Nottingham’s University Park campus. The new helipad will be built on the QMC campus itself – enabling patients to be delivered into the expert hands of the Major Trauma Centre team as quickly as possible.
