Our Robin Hood Half Marathon runners all have special reasons why they are taking on the 13.1-mile challenge. A month before their wedding, Danni and Lewis are running the Robin Hood Half Marathon to thank Hogarth Ward for the care that helped make their wedding dreams come true.
We spoke to Danni about why it was so important to them to thank Hogarth Ward.
“We’ve decided to take on the Robin Hood Half Marathon as we’re getting married in October and wanted to do something for the ward Lewis was treated on when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2019.
“We knew we wanted to do something big and felt like a half marathon was just the challenge that would help motivate us, and encourage people to donate and help us reach our fundraising goal. We both feel incredibly fortunate that we can get married, something that a few years ago didn’t feel like a possibility, so being able to thank the ward for everything they did is a blessing.
“Hogarth Ward provides such a welcoming space to patients aged 18-24, and their families in the most terrifying time. I was able to stay with Lewis throughout all his treatment and there is space where you can make your own food, sofas to chill and watch TV whilst you have chemo. There is also an outside space where you can rest, but still be close to the nurses. We absolutely know that Lewis’ treatment would have felt even harder without Hogarth Ward. To know that they played a huge part in the fact we are now, five years later, able to get married.
“Running a half marathon will be a big challenge but we are both training and trying to keep each other motivated as it approaches. We have both run 5km races for charity but never anything of this distance, but we know we can do it.
“I think we’re both a bit nervous, but I also think knowing the cause we are running for is motivation to keep us going. Even though it’s terrifying that it’s come around so quickly, we’re also so close to our wedding, so there is a lot of excitement tied into that as well.
“Lewis’ diagnosis was a reminder that if something doesn’t feel right with your body, you should speak to your doctor and get it checked. The sooner you reach out the sooner you can access the incredible care and support of the NHS.”
We’re wishing Danni and Lewis good luck for the Robin Hood Half, and we can’t wait to see them on the start line in September.
