Meet our fundraisers: Amanda takes the leap for Hayward House!

Posted on: 11 Feb 2025

At Hayward House Palliative Care Unit, every day is about providing comfort, support, and care for those with life-limiting illnesses. The dedicated team goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. This year, Amanda, a Staff Nurse in the Day Therapy Unit, is taking on the ultimate challenge to raise funds for the place she holds so close to her heart.

Taking the leap for a worthy cause

Amanda is gearing up to take part in a thrilling skydive, plunging from 13,000 feet and soaring through the sky at 120mph, all to raise money for the Hayward House Appeal

“I think Hayward House is such a fantastic place,” Amanda shares. “It provides so much enrichment to people with life-limiting illnesses and it’s such a worthwhile place to work.”

Amanda works in the outpatient department, which encompasses Day Therapy - a service that gives patients a space to talk one-on-one, plan their care, and take part in activities that enhance their quality of life. Seeing firsthand the impact that Hayward House has, Amanda is determined to contribute even more.

“I am excited and obviously nervous, but I am doing this to raise as much as we can for the Hayward House Appeal,” she says.

The skydive: A once-in-a-lifetime experience

Imagine climbing to 13,000 feet, taking a deep breath, and stepping out into the open sky. Amanda and her fellow fundraisers will be doing just that - soaring through the air at breathtaking speeds before gliding back to the ground. It’s not just an adrenaline rush; it’s an extraordinary way to support Nottingham hospitals and make a real difference for patients at Hayward House.

In 2024 our skydivers raised an amazing amount of money for areas of Nottingham’s NHS Hospitals close to their heart, including Hayward House, and thanks to their fundraising efforts, their totals contributed to the completion of some brilliant projects last year, such funding day therapies, so patients like Doreen can meet with others, socialise and try new things and hitting our £1m milestone for the Hayward House appeal, which enabled us to transform the Hayward House Garden into a newly accessible and tranquil space for patients, families and staff to have a moment of calm away from clinical environments.

Supporting the Hayward House Appeal

Hayward House provides specialist palliative care in a warm and welcoming environment, supporting over 1,000 terminally ill patients each year. Thanks to generous donations, we recently completed the first phase of our appeal - creating a newly accessible garden where patients, families, and staff can find peace and comfort. We also celebrating hitting our £1m milestone too!

Now, we are working on the next phases, which include:

  • Creating a more welcoming entrance and reception area to make patients and families feel at home from the moment they arrive.
  • Funding additional nursing posts and a specialist palliative care counselling team to provide compassionate support to both patients and their loved ones.
  • Advancing vital research into palliative care, ensuring that staff at Hayward House, local GPs, and students can provide the highest standard of care for those who need it most.
