Nottingham Neurosurgeon uses love of photography to create charity cards for Nottingham hospitals.

Posted on: 6 Feb 2025

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, kindness, and the things that bring us joy. For Mr Surajit Basu, a Neurosurgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), one of those joys is photography, and he has found a unique way to use his love of taking photos to support the hospital where he works and raise money for Nottingham Hospitals Charity at the same time.

Mr Basu has been working as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at NUH since 2005, but his love for photography started long before then and has remained a cherished hobby, offering him a creative outlet beyond the operating theatre.

“Photography is a long-time passion and hobby of mine,” he shared. “It started when I received my first camera as a birthday present years ago.”

Using the images he captured; Mr Basu has created a range of nature themed greetings cards featuring stunning photographs captured in his garden.

“Garden and wildflowers are my favourite subjects, whether a bud, withering petals, rain-soaked, or smiling on a sunny day. Flowers almost always have an insect visiting them or a silver strand of cobwebs and I try to capture a beautiful moment from the beholder's perspective.”

Inspired by Nottingham Hospitals Charity’s mission to enhance patient care and support Nottingham’s NHS hospitals, Mr Basu has donated his greeting cards to our Charity Hub, to be sold to raise money to support important projects all across our hospitals.

“NUH Charity has been supporting some fantastic projects for patients and staff well-being in the hospital and I wanted to join and help with something that I could do,” he explained.

His beautifully crafted greeting cards are now available in our QMC Charity Hub to help raise funds for the Nottingham Hospitals Charity, ensuring that patients continue to benefit from important projects and initiatives.

If you would like to purchase one of Mr Basu's cards, they are available at our Charity Hub on B Floor of Queen’s Medical Centre. All money raised goes straight back into supporting Nottingham's NHS hospitals and enhancing patient care.
