School pupils raise money for children’s respiratory care

Posted on: 19 Mar 2025

Pupils at a Nottinghamshire primary school have raised more than £1,000 to help young patients with respiratory conditions being treated at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.

Pupils from Parkgate Academy in New Ollerton raised £1,018.54 for children’s respiratory care at the hospital.

The academy received a visit from Fern Sewell, Paediatric Respiratory Nurse Specialist and Asthma Friendly Schools Lead, in January, which inspired the students to raise money to help children suffering with asthma and other respiratory problems.

Led by the school’s Junior Town Councillors, the schoolchildren held pre-loved book and refreshment sales to raise money for Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

The funds raised will be used by the children’s respiratory team to contribute towards specialist equipment, resources, and even toys and games, to improve the overall care and experience for children with respiratory conditions.

The schoolchildren’s fundraising also earned Parkgate Academy an ‘Asthma Friendly School’ Award, which was delivered by Fern when she visited again in March, with Michelle Dorman from Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

Fern said: “Thank you so much to Parkgate Academy for their incredible hard work and dedication in raising such an amazing amount for our team! It is very much appreciated by the whole team. This fantastic amount will make a meaningful difference for children with respiratory conditions, especially those with asthma.

“We appreciate their commitment to supporting our team and recognise how important it is for both the community and the school in raising awareness about asthma. It has been an absolute pleasure working closely with the school to accomplish this together!”

Thank you and well done to all the pupils at Parkgate Academy!
