Get your ovens ready for the NUH Big Bake! With over 40 bake sales already planned across Nottingham’s Hospitals during Bake Week, it’s a brilliant opportunity to raise funds for the area of the hospital that are close to your heart.

From Monday 14th October, or a date that suits you, you can host your own bake sale to support Nottingham’s NHS Hospitals.

Hear from Rachel Masters, Play Specialist at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, on why fundraising is important to her, how the charity has helped her young patients, her top tips for making your bake sale a success, plus other fundraising ideas.

Top Tips for Fundraising

Hi, I’m Rachel, a Play Specialist at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, working with children on the Burns and Plastics Unit. Nottingham Hospitals Charity has funded projects that have really benefitted our young patients, inspiring me to fundraise to give back. I’m especially passionate about raising money to send children to Burns Camps. These camps help young patients connect, share experiences, and build self-esteem. While camp costs are covered by the Family Burns Club charity, transport isn’t, and this is where Nottingham Hospitals Charity has stepped in to help.

Here are my top tips if you’re thinking about hosting a bake sale, plus a few other ways to get involved!

Bake Sale Tips

  1. Pick a busy location: Set up in a high-traffic area for maximum impact.
  2. Make it inviting: A well-decorated stall with beautifully arranged treats will catch people’s attention.
  3. Spread the word early: Give plenty of notice, especially if it’s cash-only, so everyone is ready to support.
  4. Offer variety: Include different types of cakes and cookies—even healthier options—to appeal to more people.
  5. Promote why you’re fundraising: Make sure people know where their money is going. In our case, we’re raising funds to help with transport for children to attend Burns Camps!

Other Fundraising Ideas

If baking isn’t your thing, here are some other ways to support Nottingham Hospitals Charity:

  • Raffles and “Name the Teddy” Competitions: Fun, simple, and great for all ages.
  • Sponsored Activities: Walks, runs, cycles, or even abseiling or a skydive! I recently did the Big QMC Abseil—it pushed me out of my comfort zone but was great fun! Nottingham Hospital’s Charity host lots of events each year including the Robin Run, Sky Dive, Golf Days and much more.
  • Reach Out to the Charity Team: The Nottingham Hospitals Charity Fundraising Team can talk to you about your fundraising goals and ideas, answer your questions, help with your set-up of  JustGiving pages as well as signing you up for events and cheering you on!

Whatever you choose, fundraising is a fantastic way to make a difference, and it certainly has for the children and families we support. Every effort counts!
