The hospital atmosphere can sometimes feel overwhelming for patients and their loved ones. The team on ward C52 recognised the need for a welcoming and homely space and decided to convert an old storage unit into a dedicated area where patients and their families can step away from the ward for a moment of respite. Thanks to your donations, we’ve been able to make this possible.
Ward C52 at the Queen’s Medical Centre cares for patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes and endocrinology illnesses.
This new space will have multiple purposes, from supporting families and patients in finding comfort, privacy and a sense of normalcy during their stay on the ward, to allowing doctors to have delicate and sensitive conversations with families.
Before the introduction of this room, there was no area where these conversations could take place, but now, this room is making a profound difference to patient experience.
Deirdre Nall, Ward Administrator of C52 and C53 has already seen this room's impact. “The ward C52 needed a quiet space away from the ward. The old storeroom has been transformed into a lovely quiet space for families, relatives and patients to sit away from the chaos of the ward life.
“Doctors now have a room to have meetings with the patients. When breaking bad news to relatives this is very upsetting for them, they need time away from the ward. This room is a very comfortable space for privacy. The room is so welcoming now, with the lovely warm atmosphere it has, it looks like an average living room, canvases on the walls and coffee tables, lamps with soft lighting and a TV for relaxation.
“We also have a bookshelf for different activities for our patients and a store cupboard to put all of our SWAN items in. This is a big asset to the ward enabling us to help the relatives of our SWAN end-of-life patients.”
None of this would have been possible without your donations, thank you. To continue to support projects like this one, please donate today!
