Thanks to the generosity of those who supported our Grant a Christmas Wish campaign, young patients across Nottingham Children’s Hospital are benefiting from initiatives that are bringing smiles, comfort, and creativity throughout the year.
Our latest delivery has recently arrived at the Children’s Burns and Plastics unit, offering young patients a welcome distraction from waiting rooms and helping to make the hospital environment and their recovery feel less daunting.
Many of the young patients visiting the unit are required to attend regularly for uncomfortable procedures, which means their anxiety can be even greater and having a variety of activities, toys and games on hand can make a world of difference to their mental wellbeing.
The latest delivery featured a variety of items, including soft plush toys, books, and puzzles, all carefully selected to spark imagination and provide a welcome distraction from treatment. In addition, special fibre optic lights were included, offering particular benefit to patients with sensory needs by creating a calming, soothing environment.
Sarah Barnes and Rachel Masters, Play Specialists at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, shared how these donations had made a difference:
“We want to thank Nottingham Hospitals Charity for the Grant a Wish funds. From babies to teenagers, we have been able to cater for everyone and the new toys and games have been put to great use, with patients able to thoroughly enjoy them before, during, and after their treatment in the Burns unit.
“Distraction through play is vital in our clinics, and these items have been invaluable in helping us deliver that effectively.
“Our new fibre optic lights have been particularly fantastic for patients with sensory needs. They have created a calming, relaxing atmosphere, which has helped reduce anxiety and made the overall experience much more positive.”
These items will continue to have a lasting impact on both current and future patients, and none of this would have been possible without the generosity of your donations. If you would like to continue supporting patients at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, you can contribute to the Big Appeal and help us improve play facilities across the hospital.
